Topic: 48 heater wiring

Jim Dojan    -- 12-16-2012 @ 2:20 PM
I am about to reinstall my heater after being apart for several years. My switch has five positions: off. forward fast and slow, and reverse slow and fast. There appear to be colored dots near the spade terminals on the switch. There are four wires coming off the heater. The wire colors are faded. I am assuming that one of the switch terminals is HOT. Does anyone have a schematic yuou could send me?

I am attaching a diagram of the heater control and the motor wires. Although the diagram says 39-40, this is the pattern for most of the heaters. When the color coding is faint or missing, it can get tricky. Note that the black pole is for the power from the ACC post on the ignition switch. The switch has two resistance elements to provide the slow speed. These may be broken or damaged on some switches. The motor ground (green) must be attached to a good ground. The switch functions by using separate motor brushes for directional control.

Thanks for the information. My heater fan motor runs fine in both directions. Opened up the motor and used WD40 to loosen up stiff old lubricant. Learned that to reassemble, you have to hold brushes in their cages with pieces of bent wire to insert the long end of the shaft first. Pull out wires and then reinsert the short end into the case. Have a 41 Mercury radiator availiable. It has the raised lower outlets, as it had the underseat heater.
