Topic: 1941 Tudor hood hinges

  All,
I have a 1941 Ford tudor. Everything is totally stock and I am in the process of getting this car as reliable and safe as possible without changing the basic parts. The hood would not stay up on it's own due to weak springs. Now I have installed one new spring and now have a problem with the hinge. To make a long story short. Is it ok to remove the rivets and put shoulder bolts in their place. I really don't want to change the spring hinge if I don't have to . This is not a show car. I know there are replacement hinges out there but was trying to keep it as original as possible.

Try to find a good used set of 42-48 hinges. They will fit your car and will hold the hood up higher to make it easier to work in the engine compartmewnt.

Curt, the shoulder bolts will probably change the pivot point slightly and the hinges will fail again soon. Go with TRJ's suggestion and look for a good set used hinges. Advertise on this site in the classified section as well as the Ford Barn classified's section for your parts.

Trying to repair hood hinges is usually a losing battle. Both Drake and C&G sell good quality repos. I replaced both the hood and trunk arms on my '47, and now don't worry about having them come down on my head. The hood, in particular, operates under high spring tension, and wears the pivots egg-shaped. Without an even operation, trying to adjust the hood to drop correctly is a lost cause.
