Topic: Flathead Disassembly

  I have a 46-48 flathead.

Pistons are frozen but not badly and probably not all of them.

Have been sprayining a penetrant into cyliders occasionally for a few months.

Suggestions please as to how to proceed freeing pistons.

Have thought about giving the top of each piston a few whacks with a 2 X 4 and them trying to rotate the crank with the nut on the front end.

Am in process of taking it apart to have it dipped to see if it is worth rebuilding.

Usually, if the pistons in an engine are stuck, it is likely the bores will have to be cleaned up to oversize, and honed to spec for new pistons. After the crankshaft is out, and the rods free to move, you can drive the pistons down enough to get them free. Remove the ridge at the top of the cylinder, and take the pistons out. Once the block is completely stripped, it should be hot tanked and inspected for problems such as cracks, etc. In most of the engines that have been removed long enough to be stuck, the block may be the only reusable portion. Many were removed due to serious problems such as freezing, lack of oil, etc. Because good blocks have gotten very scarce and expensive, usually it is worth the time and effort to take them apart for inspection if all appears OK on the outside.
