Topic: O/D rebuild question

Holy cannoli! After some searching, I've discovered that overdrive parts are crazy expensive.
Got me wondering...can the existing components be refurbished?
Any drawbacks to never using the O/D?
Thoughts?

What year? Yes, OD parts are pricey, but most have been obsollete since the fifties. Not parts need to be replaced unless the unit has been trashed. The real trick is to find someone who actually knows how to fix them.

1950. Define "trashed". Not sure they actually work, but all the parts are intact...totally greasy/dirty but intact. Easy way to check to see if they are working?

"Trashed" means parts that are destroyed or damaged beyond repair. This can include balk rings, planetary or sun gears, etc, making a rebuild more expensive than replacement. The only way to know is to have the unit disassembled. The OD is a desirable accessory for highway travel. Most vehicles have rear axle gearing with a high ratio for non hiway use, which makes the engine revs high when on the road. It is usually worth having it checked by a shop that knows how.

If you never intend to use the OD, it is best to remove it and all electrical connections to it and change the rear end ratio to a more favorable ratio. Leaving damaged parts on the car can cause a breakdown when you least need it.
