Please suggest an effective way (if there is one) to eliminate squeaks in the rear spring of my 34 - 5 window coupe.

Thank You

Tom

Tom, A proper method would be to disassemble the springpak, grind off (smooth) the burrs created from abrasion between leaves, and lube with fifth wheel grease before reassembling. A dirty job, but with the best results.

A quick fix, using the same lubrication: An old-time tool, best described as like a C clamp with splitter wedges, separates the leaves to allow the grease to be inserted between leaves. Just as dirty a job, but much quicker.

Fifth wheel grease is about the only stuff tenacious enough to stay where it belongs to do you some good. The original lube is no longer available, as it was made with asbestos.

Crawl under the car while someone bounces it to pin down the source of the noise. You may find that the shackles or the shocks are at fault. You can install spring liners sold by many vendors, but that requires lengthening the clips.

I had fantastic success with anti seize compound commonly used on nuts and bolts. I disassembled my springs and used the anti seize between the sections and not only did the noise go away but the ride improved greatly!

We also use a product called "Slip Plate", available at farm stores. It is a graphite solution designed to make grain bins release their contents more easily. It works better than grease, as it doen't attract and hold the road dirt that causes squeaks in the first place. After disassembling the springs, cleaning, and removing all wear pockets, you just paint it on both sids of the leaves with a brush.
