Hi, I'm putting my rebuilt engine back together and was wondering if the head bolts and intake manifold bolts were originally painted. It has cast iron heads which I am painting engine color. The original manifold bolts show no sign of paint or plating. I see that in most restorations that the head bolts were cadmium. Thanks

There may be exceptions, but many Ford engines were attached to the transmission and painted as a unit prior to installation. This may include the head and intake bolts. Accessories such as the generator, carb, and starter were added later. In reviewing Lorin Sorensen's "Famous Ford V-8s", it also shows the engines with aluminum heads and intake manifolds did not paint those parts. Interestingly, a close up of a '46 being assembled in the book shows unpainted head nuts and manifold bolts. I do know that all of the "genuine Ford rebuilt" engines that I saw had the fasteners painted. These differences certainly make Ford history interesting. In general, no actual engine assembly took place on the line, so the engine plants would be the origin of the practice.

Thanks for that info. I think I will paint the manifold bolts and keep the head nuts cadmium. Probably not authentic but it will look nice and I can always paint them later.

There is ample photographic evidence in Ford's archives to demonstrate that the engine blocks, cylinder heads, transmission cases and other cast iron parts were painted before the internal components were added. Formed paint masks were used to prevent paint from entering the valve chamber, etc., etc. In other words, no engine or transmission bolt, stud, or nut was painted Ford engine green or any other color. The studs should be black oxide and the head nuts, intake bolts and most other bolts were cad plated and not painted. You can paint the engine any way that you like, but if you want it close to original, buy the Club's 36 book and use it as a reference. Tom
