I have been advised that someone submitted an article either on this site or the Model A site about installing a GPS unit on a 6V car a while back, but I cannot locate it. Can anyone help me locate that article? or give me information pertaining to installing a Garmin GPS unit in my 35 PU which is still 6V. Thanks in advance for your help.

I do not have info on GPS installation but I do have a voltage converter that converts 6 V + to 12 V - if you are interested.
I used it to run a CB radio.

As Allen has said most use an inverter to power 12 volt accessories.I think Mac's and other V-8 vendors sell them.I used one years ago to power a stereo n my 32 and it it worked well.You might also check with Radio Shack.

I used a "Power Inverter for Positive Ground Systems, #PGPI-HC", from Custom Autosound. See http://www.casmfg.com/Accessories.htm . It powered the GPS in our '40 coupe on our trip to Tacoma just fine.

Google the model number "PGPI-HC" as prices for this inverter vary from $59 to $99.

Suggest you contact Ken Bounds. He lives in IL His e-mail is ken@boundshome.com. He has installed a GPS in his Ford Crestliner. He can provide you with all the info including the electrical convertor info.

Are you talking about a permanent install or just using the unit in your car? My Garmin will run on it's battery for about four hours. I know this is not convenient for a long trip but I can't imagine I will ever drive the 49 even that far.

Man, don't I know it Ken. I am lucky to drive any of my cars period. I have one in the garage that has had less than 300 miles put on it over the last three years.  Time is one thing that is high demand the last few years.

If all you want to do is run the GPS, I would buy one of the small USB battery packs that run on 4 AAA batteries. It will double or triple the run time of your GPS and if that isn't long enough swap out the batteries part way through the day. If you use rechargeables you can charge them up at night for the next day. Cheap and no modifications needed to your cars.

for whats it worth,
CABELA'S sells a minature 12,volt, 8 AMP battery with the charger for $29.95,this is a I believe a gell cell, its says maintenace free,
this might be easier way and simple way to go and I am sure it would have many more uses.
I am not to fond of operating 12 volt neg ground items on a 6 volt pos ground system , and this beats the other conversion system PRICE.and a better warranty,

NUMBER CA-01-8049 002 this is for one batttery and charger, this is on page 75 of the newest catalog,in fishing boat section,
.you can put this battery out of the way, and just wire up direct, to the 12 volt item you want to use,
