Topic: Outside door handle

I have finished restoring a 1951 F-1, and have a severly sagging left outside door handle. I had the mechanism out when the truck was painted, cleaned it, and greased parts. It had been sagging a little before the restoration, but is much worse now. I have searched all the catalogs I have to see if there is an overhaul kit for the mechanism, but can't find any. Does anyone have a solution, or suggestion? Hoping someone has had the same problem and found a solution. Thnaks

Red you may have a worn latch or weak spring in the latch, but you also need to check the remote mechanism for a missing spring. The remote is where the inside handle attaches. There is a spring in that mechanism that does control the outside handle. You'll need to remove the inside handle and the inspection cover on the door in order to remove the remote mechanism

  What trjford8 said.

All unrestored Ford trucks from that era have outside door handles that sag. You can get a NOS mechanism if you are lucky. That's what I did, however, I have never seen new mechanisms nor springs.

If the spring that holds the handle up (there are two springs in the latch) doesn't restore the handle position, check the square shank of the handle and the square hole in the latch. Either or both can become distorted from wear. It only takes a small loss to show up as a droppy handle. Replacement handles are available, or you can build up the shank by welding and grinding. If the hole in the latch is worn, you can make the shank oversize to compensate. If the internal part of the latch is loose, only replacement can fix it. The latches are not very substantial, given the use they get.
