jtserenityln -- Here is a picture of the '42 distributor on the '36 engine in my '34 car. Notice that the vacuum brake line from the manifold runs into the adapter required to mount this distributor on this engine. I believe this line ran directly to the distributor before 1942. Perhaps you have an earlier distributor and don't have this problem. If so, be sure that the vacuum brake or its line isn't leaking somewhere else causing your backfire.
