Here is a picture showing my spare '42 distributor and gasket. Notice that the vacuum brake passage has an O-ring that is bigger than the hole in the gasket. When I installed a similar distributor on my car I had a small vacuum leak until I made the hole in the gasket larger so that the O-ring could seal properly. This reduced the backfiring I was getting through the exhaust dramatically. It still pops a little while decelerating sometimes, but I'm blaming that on the 3/4 cam.
