For years I have had a set of Ford 6-volt fog lights on my 46 coupe for looks and would like to now wire them up for use. Will running them in conjunction with my headlights tax my generator? Additionally since I am not using my heater, I thought about using my 4-way heater switch to power them up.

To calculate generator load, determine the current requirement of the equipment to be attached. A 35 amp generator in a 6 volt car can furnish about 210 watts. This is 6 volts times 35 amps= 210 watts. Most non-halogen lights, such as headlights, draw 50 watts, leaving about 110 watts for the rest of the vehicle. As lamps are pure resistance, if you know the current draw, or measure it with a meter, and multiply that current time the system voltage, you get the wattage. I wouldn't expect an ordinary pair of fog lamps to draw as much as headlights. I would operate them with a separate switch, as I'm not sure of the capacity of the heater control. Motors draw current differently from lamps.
