I have a 1936 Phaeton Deluxe that has had its electrical system changed to 12v and the exhaust converted to dual with Reds Heads. All of this was done before I acquired the car. I am considering adding overdrive (probably Mitch*ll). Is this likely to impact the value of the car? Also, does anyone have a website or phone number for Mitch*ll? Thank you, John

Mitch*ll advertises in the V8 TIMES. As for the question of whether an OD increases value, a Columbia does, as it was a Ford approved accessory. I have a Ryan OD in my '47 convertible, and the cost several years ago was about $2,000. I'm not sure they still make them, but it really helps to cruise at hiway speeds without a screaming engine. If you like to cruise, an OD is a fine addition. If you want to regain the cost, dollar for dollar, a Columbia is the way to go. If you just want to enjoy long distance trips, any OD is a good investment. I am not a purist, so being correct is not my thing. If you can't drive your car reliably and have fun, there isn't much fun in having the car. Old cars are not an "investment" in the true sense of the term, so increasing value shouldn't be a primary consideration, in my opinion based on lots of years loving old cars and trucks.

One of the problems with going with the proper Columbia is that you also need the correct controls. The Columbia is a great unit, and parts to make it even more rugged are currently available. If you are looking at "increasing value", you will want to make sure that the controls (which vary from year to year) and very difficult to source are correct. You should also realize that the 12V electrical system, and "headers" would detract from the overall value to a "purist". So....What would I do? I'd add the Mitch*ll, and offer to remove it if you decide to sell your jewel, along with the 12V/headers if that's what the buyer demands. You can always resell the Mitch*ll and headers.

I think the Mitch*ll is a great unit and it will be cheaper.The only issue you may have with the Mitch*ll is floorpan clearance. On some cars you have to modify the floorpan to install and clear the unit. Check this out before you make the purchase. The Columbia is much better today due to the new parts availble for it. It will cost more money, but it is original equipment accessory. As I recall the controls for the 36 were available repo some time back. Not sure if you can still get them.
