Topic: hot battery terminal

I'm doing basic testing on a 1936 flathead (6 volt positive ground) and have begun with only the starter wired...it does turn, but the negative battery terminal is very hot to the touch. Is this a bad ground issue?

Any time a connection gets hot, it is due to a high resistance between conductors. It is not unusual for a battery terminal to show this, as the current draw of the starter is hundreds of amps. It can be a poor contact between the cable clamp and the battery pole, or it may be between the terminal clamp and the cable. This is usually due to infiltration of acid into the joint. Anytime the cable is attached to a battery, it is essential that both the post and the clamp be thoroughly cleaned. The brush tools are not expensive, and should be in every toolbox.

Thanks. The only other thing I could think of is that the previous owner used a 12 volt replacement cable at some time. I'll look into new cable...is 2/0 the appropriate size for 6 volt?

12 volt cables are smaller and will have more resistance(heat). The 2/0 cable should work.

The hot cable can also be caused by the starter drawing more current than the system is designed for.The starter should draw between 150-200 amps.
