Topic: Need my distributor identified.

I have a late '36 85hp. The distributor has a coil that mounts with 3 screws and cone shaped, nothing like the 2 shown in the 35-36 book. Pics to follow.

Thanks Guys.

Looks like you have the 1937 & later distributor, and should be using the "flat top" late 36 coil & distributor.

One he shows is a 37-41 dist . he needs a late 36 one an odd ball at best. All his componants can be used on the36 one except the coil.Roter, points, inner + outer caps are same as in the dist he has. ken ct.

Ken ct. has what I need! Just to let everyone know, Ken is fabulous! He rebuilt my fuel pump and carburetor, did a great job. I now eagerly wait the CORRECT distributor for my car. Anyone need a 37-41 distributor??

Yes, Lincoln is correct. You have a "78" distributor which is '37 to '41. You are looking for the "68" distributor if you want the "late" '36 style two screw flat top coil. Not so many of those around.

You can tell the flat top distributors because the two screw holes are at a diagonal and they have a "68" stamped on the back next to the flat blade that mounts into the slot of the cam.

The three screw biscuit coils and 48's are much easier distributor/coil setup to find.

Jumping in because I had the same setup and the same problems.

If you change the distributor to the 36 three bolt style - I.E. coil mounts with three bolts, then you may/probably/will have to change the inner rotor caps. The spacing was different 32-36 and 37-40. I suggest you trial fit the inner caps and spin the dist. by hand to make sure there is no interference between the rotor and the contacts on the inner cap. You probably will damage one or the other if you install it without checking and it turns out to be the wrong one.

If you view the early style the contacts are arranged in a more rectangular pattern. The later ones are more like a square.

Good luck

Henry

Thanks. As soon as I get the distributor back from Skip I will do that. Skip is modernizing my water pumps, rebuilding a coil and setting up the distributor I got from Ken ct.
