How do I bench test a 6volt amp gauge for a '51 car v8?

Using a six volt battery, place the ammeter in series between the poles with a load in the circuit. A headlight bulb works well for that purpose. If the needle swings when the wire is placed across the battery, it is likely the gauge is OK.
