Topic: 1936 Ford car steering assembly

Hi Guys, In rebuilding my steering box a couple of issues have surfaced. The 1936 Chassis Parts List, dated November 1935,lists the needed parts as B-3562 (Washer, steering worm thrust assembly)and B-3553 (Cup, steering worm bearing, upper). My problem surfaced when I bought a replacement cup, part # 68-3553, per the 1928 thru 1947 Chassis Parts book, and found it to be wider than my original cup. Also, the 1928/1948 catalog does not list the thrust washer. I'm thinking that the washer was no longer needed when the new cup became available because the new cup's added width is equal to the thickness of the thrust washer. Per the catalog, the gear box was not redesigned for use with the new cup. I've decided I can reassemble my box using the new cup without the thrust washer. I hope I have been clear here and that you will let me know if my thinking is right. Aside from getting it right I have wondered why the thrust washer was obsoleted because it originally must have had a necessary function.

I'm beginning to think I have been sold a bearing cup that is not a 68-3553 as I can see no way to make it work with the thrust washer. It fits in the gear box but because of its width I am unable to properly fit the upper steering housing cap. Does anyone know the difference between cups B-3553 and 68-3553 which Ford books say should both fit the 36 gear box.

The 68-3553 replaced the combination of B-3553 and B-3562(thrust washer) per The 1928-36 Chassis Parts List(July 1936)

Thanks Don, Per your July 1936 Parts List does it indicate the steering housing upper cap #3589 was modified when the cup # 68-3553 was issued. My cup is flat on the bottom (I assume part #B 3589)so it will not accept the 68 cup as it protrudes upward.

The steering column exploded view in the July 36 Chassis List does not show any additional components. The sttering housing upper cap (B-3589) is the same as before. It shows 2 shim gaskets..B-3593 and B-3594.

Thanks so much. I've got the unit almost together. I had erred by not fully seating the upper bearing cup. Once I tapped it gently it went in place and with the proper number of gaskets the housing upper cap fits as you said it would. I was immensely helped with your information and I'm grateful we have the Forums in place. Thanks again.
