Can someone describe what a bad ujoint would sound like for instance a whistle ,a raping ,a clang ? I find it really hard to describe a noise when the car is moving only not when it idles. Thanks

I'm no expert, but A bad universal will have a rhythmic clicking noise which varies exactly with vehicle speed. Silent when the car is stopped. I'd describe the noise as loud enough to hear while driving but not too terribly loud. My 2c Henry

If the retaining pin for the driveshaft coupler comes adrift, it can rub the inside of the torque tube, and make a clicking noise when it drags across the inside weld seam.

Trying to diagnose noises without actually hearing them is a guessing game. Has there been any driveline work done in the last year? Genuine Ford u-joints seldom cause problems. Rotating parts seem to be involved. Dan's suggestion is one possibility. If the bolt holding the u-joint to the transmission is loose, or has come off, that is another. It may be an internal transmission problem, or related to a loose part in a brake drum. I'd get the car on a hoist that allows the wheels to rotate and run it while listening for the noise. That is what we do in our shop. Noises as "telegraphed" from one point to another, and that is the best way to isolate the cause. If the noise seems to come from the u-joint cover, fill it with grease and see it it changes.
