I just removed the old master cylinder from my 39. I assume it was the original because of the name printed on the side. It says Wagner Lockheed. I know that Lockheed is a company that produces aviation parts, but why were the two companies in a joint venture building brake parts? If anything I would have expected to see Bendix on the side of the master.

Today the company is simply known as Wagner Brake parts. Originally they were a division of Lockeed Aircraft Corporation. It wasn't a "joint venture", but rather a part of the parent company. You can still buy Wagner master cylinders, but they don't say Wagner Lockeed. Don't know whether it is original to a 39, but it could be.

Wagner brake parts was a division of Wagner Electric in the late 40's and early 50's. They were bought out by Studebaker and later were acquired by Federal Mogul. I don't know what brand master cylinder you would find on an original 1939 car, but the Wagner-Lockheed brand is from 1956 onward. Tom

I wonder which of the two theorems are correct - the one about the company that built the famaous and lethal P-38 Lightning; or the company that went under with the Studebaker "pancake" automobile of the 1950's?
