Just read numbers on block. Stamped near back, psngr. side between head and intake manifold. "C 28 G" The "G" appears to be upside down. If I'm reading this correctly, I get May 28, 1951. Just to the right of these numbers is what looks like an "E" inside hexagon. Could this be an "M", just rotated 90 degrees? This engine is in a 51 Ford. The Cyl. head showe "OCM"...Hmmmm? Your comments??? Jack

All: Wouldn't 8CM indicate a Mercury, rather than a Ford, which should be 8BA?

8CM is the Mercury designation on the heads. There should also be "Mercury" cast into the heads. These were used with the 4 inch crank, but could be bolted onto the 8BA blocks. The only way to know if you have a Ford or Mercury engine is to pull a head and measure the stroke. It is not unusual to find numbers stamped elsewhere on the block, such as on the top, as rebuilders commonly stamped blocks to mark them for warranty purposes. Most of these marks have no meaning, otherwise.
