I need to replace a left rear spring shackle bolt on my 1939 Tudor? Can this be done with the spring and axle in the car? Any special tools required? Thanks, Larry Kenworthy

If it's the spring (bolt) you want to replace you may find it easier to do with the spring removed and on your bench. The axle perch (bolt) can be done easily enough on the car. Removing the old one is a bit of a chore but certainly doable by any decent mechanic. I suggest knocking out the bolt first. Then, I prefer to knock out the "lining" with the use of a hammer and cold chisel that I have ground a small "cup" in to the leading edge. That "cup" will get beneath the old lining and peel it back. Installing new pins properly is a bit more of a challenge. They must be pressed in. There is a special tool that makes this job simple. Do NOT grind down the outer diameter to make the new pin install easier. That defeats the purpose of replacing the old pin. There's a very good reason the authentic pins were .004 - .005 oversize. If you are not concerned with authenticity, the replacement type pins with separate rubber bushings are much easier to install. They do not offer the same torsional rebound of the authentic pins but for most practical purposes will suit the need.

Thanks for the help. It is the one in the axle perch, so maybe it won;t be too difficult. I will be relacing it with the type with the rubber inseerts. Larry Kenworthy
