I'm new to the forum. I have a 1952 Ford Ranch Wagon with V8 and Fordomatic. It's an original car with 52,000 miles, my dad bought it as a dealer demo in 1953 and we've had it in the family ever since. I want to remove the stater motor but I cannot figure out how. The shop manual only shows a picture and says the V8 with Fordomatic uses the same mounting as the 6 cylinder engine. I removed the only bolt that looks like it holds the starter (1/2" head) but the starter stays put tight. Can anyone guide me in the right direction? Any help is much appreciated.

I am going to take the liberty of making a guess based on the earlier starters. It should be easy for you to tell if I am wrong. On the earlier starters there are two bolts with 7/16 heads. Looking at these bolts you would assume they hold the starter parts together but in reality they run entirely through the starter and into the flywheel housing to attach the starter to the housing. There is also on the earlier starters an "L" shaped bracket on the front of the starter that attaches to an engine pan bolt. Let me know if I am right. Charlie Stephens

Charlie, I think you've hit the nail (or rather the bolts) right on the head. Looking at the illustration in the parts manual, I can see the end plate has three holes in it, one would be for the bolt I found entering from the rear and the other two would be for the long bolts that traverse the starter motor from front to rear. I would never have imagined that they would thread into the block! I will confirm ASAP, 'though it may be a few days. Thanks very much for your reply.
