Have some 15" wheels on a '48 the rims of which measure 6 3/4 overall width. Would that likely be a 5 1/2 rim?

Measure the wheel width on the inside of the wheel where the bead of the tire will seat when inflated. Tom

Tires are on the rims. Subtracting out the bulge of the tires, I come up with 6 3/4". Just wondering about the size of the rims.

Put your tape measure through the window in the rim and measure where the bead of the tire sits. I suspect you may in fact have a 5 1/2 inch rim. Those generally came on the later pickups, but you can use them on cars and use the early hubcap. If you car has the lever shocks make sure the wheel does not have too much offset to the inside. With body sway on the trnasverse spring the shock arm can cut a groove on the inside of the tire. I speak from experience on this issue and it's not fun having to buy two new tires.

trjford8, Measured as your suggestion and it came out 5". Confirmed this comparing it to a known 4" rim. Thanks a bunch.
