Topic: Coil Conversion

I am considering replacing the coil on my '36 Deluxe Touring Fordor with an upright one. Is the conversion kit offered by C&G the way to go? How does the coil mount as I see they don't offer an mount for the coil.

Thanks as always Guys!

  Tim,

Are you having a problem with your coil that leads you to this? To me, the conversions just introduce a new set of problems. Many of the guys running stock ignition systems have their coils rebuild by Skip Haney of Punta Gorda, FL. He replaces the internals with modern materials and they are quite reliable. You can get more information about Skip at www.fordcollector.com.

You mount the coil in any position that allows the high voltage lead to reach the adaptor on the distributor. We put them at the front of the left hand head in the same place as the later 42-48 coils. You have to fabricate a bracket that fastens under one of the intake manifold bolts. That isn't a big job. We have used an L shaped bracket, and attached the coil with a couple of radiator hose clamps facing downward. I join Ken in recommending Skip Haney. He can wind a conventional coil for 12 volts if you prefer. As you expressed an interest in a Mallory coil, the adapter will do that.
