Hello, What do I need to do to replace the rear spring shackle studs on my 1948 Tudor. I have the rear end assembly removed. Will I need any special tools? Thanks!

The steel encased spring shackles are pressed in place and special tools make the job much easier. Suggest you do a "search" the button is above. The rubber bushing type do not require the special tools.

The replacement types are usually rubber or Teflon. Either work well, are easy to install, and eliminate squeaks. When you get the shackle pins out, you can insert a hacksaw blade and cut the old bushing so it can be removed. Most resist being driven out, and cutting makes it much easier. Replacing that upper spring shackle stud on a '48 is a most challenging endeavor. Driving out the center isn't too bad but cutting through the sh*ll with a hacksaw blade is tedious. You don't want to rock the blade and cut into the spring eye. The new stud sh*ll is about .005 over so the spring eye needs to be throughly cleaned out and very slightly enlarged. Ebay offers a Ford shackle stud driver for $20.

Need to correct myself on the term spring eye. Meant to say shackle mount. The lower pin and rubber bushings go through the spring eyes.

I'll add to Supereal's advice: Use a torch. Heat the pin and work it, it'll practically fall out. Don't play the torch on the spring itself and you're good. cut the innards with a hacksaw and you got it. I used the teflon bushings, they tap right in easily, and are not noticeable if you blacken the metal parts. Alan

Speedway Motors has them. They'll last forever... or the bushings are replaceable if they do wear out.
