Need to remove the race in the diff.axle bell 68-4222.

I have a bearing press, but there is only a small lip of the race exposed on the ID and it's a long way from the wheel end of the housing. Thought about using a slide hammer with a hook end, but sure don't want to tear up the bell.

There are several ways to remove. A friend who does many has a steel plate that he works to the rear of the race and has a hole in the center for a slide hammer. The hook on the slide hammer may work and a pipe through the wheel end with the seal removed. I have been told they come out rather nicely without a lot of effort. Do replace the seals B-4245 they are the same as the front drive shaft seal.

Two special tools were used to replace the differential bearing cups: BV-302 for removal, and BV-306 to pull the race into position. The bearings are a press fit on the axle with a BV-93 tool. As these tools are mostly unavailable today, it is best to have a good machine shop do the job before you damage the housings.

I just replaced the carrier bearings & races in the rear end for my '40. This procedure works for me. I mig weld a continuous hot bead around the face of the race, then turn the housing over & use a 1/2" rod to tap out the race, comes out easily, sometimes falling out.
