How are people checking the clearance between the lining and the drum for proper operation? Looking to reduce the groaning I have while applying the brakes.

That noise is most usually due to lack of proper adjustment or too hard linings, or both. Woven linings provide better braking and less noise. To adjust, raise all wheels off the ground and back off the adjusters on the backing plates fully. Block the brake pedal down about half way, and adjust the clevis on each rod until the lining just touches the drum on each wheel. Unblock the pedal to see how much travel you have before the brakes are fully applied. If you need additional pedal, raise each wheel and turn the adjuster on that wheel until the lining just touches, then back off slightly. Never adjust brakes by changing the rods. That unbalances the system. Finally, be sure that the clevis ends and pins are not badly worn, and that the cross shaft bushings are firm. This message was edited by supereal on 7-11-12 @ 2:25 PM
