Topic: Gear Oil?

The owner's manual for my '35 passenger car specifies SAE 160 oil for the trans and differential. 85W - 140 is available locally. Experiences?
I'm a one year owner and hadn't heard of 600W oil before buying my '35. What is it?
Thanks in advance! Roger J.

85-140 is fine. It leaks less than the more common 80-90. 600W "oil" was used back inthe Model A days. It is a semi-asphaltic substance that has an unfortunate tendency to eat soft metals, such as synchronizers in the later transmissions. Model A's leaked everywhere, such as around the places where the shafts stick out of the transmission case. It was a primitive gear box which had no soft metals in it. Most of the specified oils and greases set out in the original owner's manuals are long obsolete. There are very good modern substitutes. When the need arises, post your questions here, and all of us will try to help out.
