Hey guys, I bought a hood ornament from a member here through a classified ad that I placed. The seller said it is an NOS piece. I have no reason to doubt his word, and I don't think they were ever reproduced. It is in beautiful condition and it has a Ford part number cast into it, only thing is that the number is 1 digit different than the two I have that came off 49 Fords and were definitely factory original. The last digit of the number is out by 1. The ornament is also slightly different shape in the front where it meets the engine bonnet. As you can see in the picure the appearance of the underside is also a little different from the original equipment pieces. It looks impressive on the car and I am glad to get the correct ornament (there was a '50 piece on there when I bought it). Are these differences just because it was an off the shelf replacement instead of a factory installed piece? I am mostly just curious as I am completely satisfied with the purchase, I got this ormament at a very fair price and it is a show quality piece. What do you guys make of this? There is a link to a picture of the ornaments at the bottom of this message. Thanks, Scott. Scott: There are often differences in parts and numbers because there are NOS (new old stock) that came from a dealer's shelves when the cars were new, and NORS (new old replacement stock) that was issued later, usually after production of the vehicle was replaced by the next year's models. Differences are usually slight, if any at all. Great looking car!

In addition to Supereal's first-hand experience, Ford also used various regional suppliers during this period for trim pieces. I have observed very slight differences in moulding details depending upon the source. All were "Genuine Ford Parts", just came from different contract suppliers.

The same hood ornament was used on the 49 and 50 Fords. The casting numbers could vary by supplier and date of manufacture. You pieces show the casting number, not the part number. The P/N of the ornament is 0A-16850 or 0A-16850-AZ8. I have no idea of why the 2 P/N. You would have to go to the Archives and research the difference Tom

Thanks for the advice guys and the compliment supereal. Actually Tom the 49 and 50 ornaments are different. That's why it is hard to find a 49. It was a one year piece and isn't being reproduced. The 50 is for some reason. More demand for it I guess, though there were a pile of 49's made too. Cheers, Scott. 1949 Custom Tudor. http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e42/35thLE/49016.jpg

Scott; Ford for 1950 was 50 ways better (at least that what the advertising said), so that could be why those with 1949's have to watch the 1950's parts being reproduced.

Scott, thanks for correcting me. I was using the parts catalog as a reference, and as usual, it only shows service replacement parts. Tom
