Hello, I just purchased a 1953 Mercury. The previous owner took off all of the chrome and ID badges and painted it hotrod black. The title says it's a Marauder but according to what I've read on the Internet, the Marauder didnt come out until 1958. I'm having a heck of a time trying to decode the VIN. I attached a pic on the VIN tag. I would appriciate any help in identifying my new car and what the VIN tag can tell me. I also wonder what the value is on these cars. It's a good driver car. It has a flathead V-8 with auto trans and runs great. The only thing it really needs bad is the interior redone.

Your Vin Plate indicates that you have a Custom 2Dr Sedan built in the Wayne Michigan Assembly Plant painted Sherwood Green with Green and White Cloth seats. The car was built October 13,1952.

Getting a handle on the value of an old car, unseen, is a bit like asking "how high is up?". The price guide we usually refer to says that a 1953 Merc Custom 2 door in average (#3) condition brings $8,370. An example needing a new interior, or other major restoration, drops to $3,720. In #2 condition, very good throughout, $13,020. Given the state of the current market, and your description, it is reasonable to expect the lower end of the estimates. Two and four door examples are always on the lower end of the scale, with convertibles and wagons on top.

Thanks so much for the reply. I'm going to register the car tomorrow, what should the model name read? "Custom 2DR" or "Monterey Custom" or ? I attached a picture if that may help at all. Thanks again

The Monterey was an upscale series in the 52-53 Mercury line. Some of the additions for the Monterey are a stainless molding along the rocker panel and different interior options. The 2 series were Custom and Monterey Tom
