Topic: 6 Volt battery cable

daoust    -- 06-27-2012 @ 9:15 AM
One of the things I got dinged for in Hiawassee (2 points) was that my 6 volt battery cable was the wrong gauge. I bought it brand new from Macs as a 6 volt solenoid to battery cable but evidently it's not uncommon for the supply houses to wrap up 12 volt calbles in a 6 volt package.

My querstion is this.....what is the correct gauge (I've heard "00") and is there a source for them?

Any help appreciated.

  David,

"OO" is what you want. The original was "1" gauge, but "00" works so much better. Some years ago I had resorted to a 6/12 battery because of hard starting problems. I now have a 6 volt battery and "00" cables and she starts just fine. I had mine made at an auto parts house. Get all 3, bat to solenoid, solenoid to starter, and bat to ground. Use the old ones as templates.

Pete

Thanks, Pete

If original was "1" then "00" would still be a deduction on the Concours.

But you want it to run to get on the Concourse don't you?

Here's the one I got from Dennis Carpenter that is the proper gauge and cloth wound like original: http://www.parts123.com/parts123/yb.dll?parta~dyndetail~Z5Z5Z50000024q~Z5Z5Z543338~P25.00~~~~S3JB0RE27C66219210424g~Z5Z5Z5~Z5Z5Z50000024Q I'm not sure what gauge it is. It works fine for me and I didn't lose any points on it in concourse judging.

ford38v8:Yes; but he must have had it running with the 12 volt cable to get on the Concourse to get dinged a point. Wrong is wrong regardless of which way, up or down. The difference between "1" and "00" may not even be noticed on the field, but judges do "split hairs" as the saying goes.
