A friend is helping me get a Schramm air compressor started. It is using a 1940 V-8 flathead engine. Four cylinders compress air, four fire normally. We wonder if timing is different than it would be for normal use. Thanks. Phil Kelly 530-877-6354 paradise-cove@sbcglobal.net

It has been a very long time since I worked on one of those. As I recall, they had a special cam to go with the heads and manifolds. The distributor used the same preset timing as the regular engines and adjustment wasn't necessary as advance was mechanical, and the throttle was operated by a complicated air pressure sensor coupled with a relief valve. A local contractor had one, but it didn't have sufficient capacity to run a jackhammer very well. Surviving examples are rare today.
