Here's a head scratcher that y'all may be able to help me out with. I recently retrieved my 59a engine from the machine shop (they did alot of work - boring, grinding, balancing). When I went to put the cam shaft in today, I noticed that cam gear won't mate up with the crank gear. Although I'm perhaps no mechanical genius, the cam and crank gears seem to have the opposite pitch, such that I can't see they's mate up even if flipped around. I took pictures of the underside of the engine before I sent it to the machine shop, which should be attached to this post. Check out the orientation of the crank's gear. In a subsequent post, I'll post what it looks like today.

Now, check out the orientation of the crank's gear in the photo taken today. It just doesn't seem like my cam gear fits anymore. Am I missing something?

I suspect that maybe one of the gears is for a 59 series engine and the other gear is for an 8ba. Somewhere along the way they got mixed.

Apparently they removed the crank gear, probably to grind and /or polish the crank, and replaced it backwards. You can confirm this by looking for the timing mark on the crank gear. It usually is a small dimple that matches the one on the timing gear. If it isn't there, the crank will have to come out.
