Looking for input/recommendation on what type of adheasive I should use for gluing the rubber components on my 38 such as cowl vent gasket, trunk lid gasket, door gasket, etc. The car is black and I prefer something that doesn't eat paint if that is possible. Also like your thoughts on how to apply and process if you have experience. Thanks!

John: My 38 cowl vent gasket, and door gaskets are held in place with 3M "Super weatherstrip adhesive". This stuff is available in black, but I used the original "gorilla-snot" yellow version. Just about any contact adhesive will work, but the key is two-fold: 1. Don't use any more than is absolutely necessary. 2. Apply a thin coating to both surfaces to be joined, 3. Allow to dry to a "tack" condition before bonding. This stuff is a lot like Formica adhesive, in that it has to "skim-over" (that is not stick to your finger) before you can make a good bond. I am sure there are other contact adhesives that are available, but I've had good luck with the above referenced product. The base solvent in this product is acetone, so it WILL EAT PAINT! I know of no contact adhesives that are permanent, that do not attack most paints. Just be careful!

I use 3 M weatherstrip adhesive. It is black, and holds extremely well. It is a very good idea to mask around the place to be cemented, unless you are more careful than I am.

I use contact cement { glue } It works very well.

Thanks guys for the product info. In the areas of cowl vent and trunk lid, what method have you used to apply the glue in that valley channel where the gasket goes? You say not to use too much and just wondered if you had a proven applicator? Masking around the area is a great idea - thanks.

Also a thanks to Super and Stoker along with others that provide so much valuable experience and expertise to us who had trouble putting our first childs baby crib together. Your advice saves time, money and I'm sure aggrevation and keeps the hobby on the lighter side. If only my wife saw it that way!!

It doesn't take much effort to post more than 4000 time, but it does take a lot of know how and research to be right like Supereal has been. Congratulations Bob. Thanks, Tom. That is high praise from a member and friend who posts such good info. As to being a "senior" member, my main claim is just having lived almost eight decades. I would brag, but my 57 year old son makes my store of info pale by comparison. Today's mechanics, now "techs", have skills that we "shade tree" guys never dreamed of.
