Topic: belt tension

I've just replaced my generator and want to know what the belt tension should be. I can deflect the belt about 1 1/4". I know it shouldn't be too tight or it will wear out the bushing in the Generator.

Wolfie, About 1" deflection is usual. I use a small block of wood under the generator and a tire iron to pry it up with one hand while I tighten the nut.

Be sure that your belt has the correct cross section. Many belts sold today don't fit the pulleys correctly, so when properly tensioned, they slip under load. Just any belt of the right length may not be used on our old Fords. Most good vendors know the difference. Over tightening to compensate will damage your water pumps.

From your input I think I'm good to go. Thanks!
