On a 39 to 41 engine if the keway was worn and you had a little play in the pulley do you think that would cause a vibration in the engine?

It's possible, but we would need a better description of the vibration. Is is constant, or does it come and go as engine speed changes? Lots of things cause vibration, such as a belt or worn motor mount. The crank pulley should be tight on the crankshaft with no detectable play.

Some other causes of vibration are the pressure plate, the flywheel, bent fan blade, an engine miss, worn generator bearings.

The crank pulley should be held firmly in place by the nut and special washer an is the least likely suspect for engine vibration.

Start your diagnosis by eliminating rotating parts one at a time. Removing the generator belt would be my first step, then the fan.

If you still have the vibration, I would do a cylinder balance test. Hook up your vacuum gauge and short out one plug at a time while watching the vacuum gauge. Each cylinder should cause the same drop in vacuum.
