Topic: 36 Steering Problem

6lucky13    -- 06-06-2012 @ 12:50 PM
While turning the steering wheel on my 36, I heard a clunk and subsequently could not turn the steering wheel in either direction…even with the wheels off the ground. Any ideas on what happened and what I need to do for repairs?

Thanks…Jon

  You haven't given much information.
Is it just the interlock on the steering column?
Have you been driving the car without a problem before?

Is the ignition lock cylinder in the lock position if so there is a spring loaded bolt that will lock the column when the steering is in one position, allowing you to turn the steering wheel somewhat and then locking. To unlock the column turn the key in the lock until the chrome bolt on the RH end of the column drop extends.

If it is not the column lock, drop the drag link and try to move the steering wheel. If you can do that, look for interference in the tie rod ends and the drag link.

Thanks for the replies! I had locked the ignition and removed the key a day earlier which I normally don't do when the car is garaged. All is well...after unlocking the ignition. And, now I learned about the steering lock.
