  Hello,
I'm Peter from Switzerland and need for our DMV Informations and Pictures from the tube axle (78-3010-EXP later renumbered to 78-3010-B).
Are there any articles or user manuals with a "link" to this product with a picure or drawing?
Jerry Windle told me that there was an article in the V8-Times...it would be very helpful to get some informations.

  I think that the article Jerry was referring to was in the Nov/Dec 2001 issue. It talks about the 1938 tubular axle.

  The tubular front axle was used with the V8 60 in the US. If you find one under a car with the larger engine, someone did an engine swap. However, it may have been used in Europe on the Ford cars made for that market. The "EXP" would indicate "for export".

  What you are saying about the tubular axle being used on 60 h.p. cars only is something I have always been told and believed but it seems as though that is an "urban myth",at least according to facts written in the Early Ford V8 Club restoration books for 1937 and 1938/39. Quoting from the 37 book on front axle: " Most front axles,# 78-3010-A were an arched H-beam. A tubular axle ,78-3010-EXP MFG later renumbered to # 78-3010-B was used in very limited production,100 cars a day Dearborn only,on 85 Horsepower cars". Now going to the 38 / 39 book on front axle first pargraph is pretty much the same wording." A tubular front axle originally numbered 78-3010-EXP MFG was released 7/2/37 for Model 78",( this is the 85 h.p.) 100 cars a day Rouge line only. The original release specified these axles were to be ordered in batches of 1000 at a time.It was released for Model 81A (1938) on the same basis 9/29/'37 efective with Job # 1 1938. 5/2/38 the quantity specified per day was doubled to 200 Rouge line only,still restricted to 81A chassis (85 h.p). 8/26/'38 requirements were again doubled to 400 per day rouge line only. This goes on and on and never mentions that this axle was ever used on a 60 h.p passenger car but was an expierment to see if they would hold up on the heavier 85 h.p car,evidently this project was deamed unsuccessfull. They were used on 91A (1939) and 1940 until stock run out.My 60 h.p. 1937 Ford was an I beam axle and personally I have never seen a tubular axle on a correct 60 h.p Ford 197-1940 but still have always been told that is what they were built for. Check out the restoration books,are they wrong ?

  I don't have the 37, or the 39-39 restoration books, so I'm unfamiliar with them. I have seen tubular front axles on two 37 60hp over the years. From your data, it may have been coincidental. The "green book" doesn't make any distinction as to axle type for those years. I know that the tube axles were sought back in my "hot rod days", but almost impossible to locate. I appreciate your info. Ford was never exact on much of their manufacturing information. The Club's restoration books are thoroughly researched at such sources as the official Ford library, si would trust them.

  Tube axles did in fact appear in the deluxe models on occasion. I currently have a '40 convertible that is quite obviously factory equipped with a tube axle. I also had a '39 standard coupe with an 85 HP engine that was (positively) factory equipped with a tube axle.

It would be easier if you told us exactly what your DMV was interested in. Do they want to know if it existed? Do you have one that they think is home made and dangerous?
