Topic: fuel pressure regulator

I have a 1937 Ford 85 HP with a Stromberg EE "97" carburetor. I have been told that the float/needle valve in this carb can not handle more than 2 1/2 psi, that the stock pump puts out 3 1/2 psi and that I should use a fuel pressure regulator set at 2 1/2 psi between the pump and carb. I would appreciate comments.

My Stromberg 97 has always handled the 3 1/2 lbs. from my stock mechanical pump without any problems.

Thanks. My recollection was that we had no such problems in the late thirties when I was a high school car nut.

The Stromberg carb should handle 3 1/2 pounds of fuel pressure with no problems. Fuel pressure regulators are more trouble than they are worth. The factory spec for the fuel level is 15/32 to 1/2 " below the top of the body casting. Check your carb float to be sure it isn't leaking and partially filling with gas. Most external fuel leaks with that carb are found around the main jet plug below the bowl.
