How do I locate a problem with my 36 ford jumping out of second gear? It does this during acceleration and deceleration dneddinger@sbcglobal.net

That is almost always due to excessive wear of bearings. The only permanent cure is removal and overhaul of the transmission. Sometimes changing to 140 weight transmission oil will reduce it a bit, but it will increase as more wear occurs. Be sure that the shifter isn' t sloppy, as this can prevent full gear engagement, as well.

Sometimes replacing the shift lever detents helps this problem. This can be done by only removing the top cover and replacing the worn parts.
