Topic: U-Joint lubrication

  Maybe I'm missing something

I don't see how the grease fitting on the U-Joint cover bell at the torque tube could lube the u joint. It just empties into the bell

Are you to fill the entire bell with grease?

Yes. Fill the whole thing. Originally something called "soda soap" grease was recommended. The nearest thing to that now is a 0 or 00 grade grease such as John Deere corn head grease. Regular chassis grease is too stiff and will most likely allow the U-joint to just carve out an opening to spin in and not get the grease where it needs it.

I've used chassis lube for many years without any problems. I extended the fitting so the grease gun could easily reach it, and I give it some each time I lube the rest of the chassis. The actual Ford U-joints are almost indestructable. I believe much of this is due to the fact that transmission oil, which liberally leaks into the u-joint housing, mixes with the grease on its way down the torque tube to the rear end. Soda soap is obsolete. I use Mystik JT-6.
