Topic: Steering Gear

I'm trying to ID the year of the steering gear in my '36 coupe.
Is there a visual difference between a '36 and a '37 gear box?

If you can find a part number on the box, the 36 will show a prefix of 48. The 37 will be a 21A. The 37 mounts to the frame with a large bracket, while the earlier type uses a smaller, triangular flange.

  Thanks super
My '36 driver has lots of non original parts. The banjo steering wheel is definitely '37. So I suspected the whole steering gear assembly could be '37.

It looks like any numbers on the box would be on the frame side. Can't see them with gear installed.

I also bought a bracket off eBay to mount a '37 box in a '36. It looks just like the bracket already in the car.. Large bracket not triangular.

I saw a '37 box on eBay listed as 78-3550. Don't see that number in the green book.

  thirtysixford,

The reason the number doesn't appear in the green book is that it is probably a raw casting number (just a guess) and only completed parts or assemblies are listed in the green book.

  Supereal,

I hate to disagree with you but a part introduced in 1937 for a passenger car would carry a "78" prefix not "21A" (which I believe was 1942 passenger car).

Bob, I gotta agree with Charlie. Whatta you been smokin' ?
What's worse, I don't think you can blame that one on the Green Bible, either!

It ain't smokin', guys, just my doggone trifocal glasses. If you look at page 97 in the green book, you will see the housing assembly for 37-48 listed as 21A-3548-A. However, the sector is listed with the 78 prefix. As you both know, the green book lists the replacement parts when the original is discontinued, so often it is not the final word on original numbers. That is why neither he nor I could find 78-3550 listed as the '37 box in the book. Thanks for trying to keep my honest, anyway.
