Came across this Ford instruction sheet for installing a spare tire radio antenna. One part I am not excited about is the need to drill a 5/16" hole through body sheet metal for the antenna lead. I think a better approach would be to run the cable under the car along the frame and have it enter the cab via a hole made in a wooden floor board or through an existing hole in the firewall or possibly share the hole that the speedometer cable enters the cab. The latter would require a larger grommet to accommodate the two cables. At any rate here are the instructions:

  Tom, another suggestion which may work is to use a 34 headlight stand bolt on the spare tire mount. Those bolts have a hole in them that may be big enough for the antenna lead.

  When we install an antenna, we use ordinary TV coax cable to run the lead. You can use as much as you need to avoid most structural alterations between the radio and the antenna. If you don't want to drill the body, get a magnetic base CB antenna that you can remove for appearance sake at shows, etc. For maximum efficiency, be sure to adjust the "trimmer" in the radio for best reception. You can often find it behind one of the knobs, or clearly marked on the side of the chassis box.

  Super.... Your suggestion to use a magnetic base CB antenna is to simple.
Car guys like to take things apart, cut, drill, hammer, weld, cuss a little, then hammer and weld some more. After painting everything up the job looks great, and it only took three and a half days.

  Again, you are so right, Bill. Probably the one and only benefit of the "golden years" is that most of us either forget what we started out to do, or had to take a nap before it was done!
