I have addressed this issue before but have new development. When I start my 49 and while it is warming up I have crazy amp needle flutter. As the engine (and regulator) approach operating temp it diminishes about 85% When I turn on headlights as load it is about 95% gone,and when I add the radio it becomes rock solid. What is happening?

As the flutter decreases when the load is increased, I'd suspect either a poor connection between the generator and the battery, or a bad ground to the body of the regulator. It is also possible that you have one or more high resistance cells in the battery. Often, the generator is trying to charge the battery, but encounters resistance, and when the load is increased, such as turning on the headlights, the charging current is diverted to that load, and away from the battery. Be sure to check the battery cable post clamps for corrosion between the cable and clamp. The last time I fixed a problem such as yours, the connection there was the culprit.

Thanks Bob - I have checked the regulator insofar as ground, and it's a new Optima with like new cables. I'm going to reinstall them and use some Dielectric grease on the posts. If that doesn't help I'll go through the other connections.
