When I took out the trans on my '36, there were some obviously home made rubber "cushions" between the trans rear bearing retainer/mount and the ears of the frame. I have the original '36 mount and the frame has not been modified. The green book lists 78-6039-A as rear engine isolator and some online parts houses say B-6039-A. Anyone know what is correct?

What you have may be correct. The rear mount used by Ford on '35s and '36s was not the best for isolating vibrations from reaching the the car's occupants. Ford realized this and in late '36 introduced a rear mounting platform that used engine mounts (note enclosed picture). Evidently, they liked what had happened and went back to the drawing board to refine the idea. This new mount became standard in '37 and was basically (in theory), carried through '48. I have a '37-'40 rear mount in my '35. It was easy to install and has made a world of difference in riding and driving comfort. Tom

48-5089 is the rear engine support for 35 & 36 it is stamped steel with a large rubber insulator molded onto the steel, the steel frame of this support is bolted to the frame ears without any additional rubber cushions. The bolts for the support to frame mount, pass through the top of the support ears and screw into the frame, without any nuts, the threads are in the frame. The E-brake support bracket bolts onto the side of the rear engine support. B-6039 is the lower motor mount cushion for the FRONT of the engine 35 & 6, where as 78-6039 is the cushion for the front and rear in 1937 when Ford went to the cast iron rear mount that does not have any rubber insulation. In 37 Ford lowered the frame mounts at the rear so the height of the additional cushions bring the rear of the transmission up to the proper height. The 37 frame does not have the threads in the rear frame engine mount (through holes), bolts are used as is the case with the front mounts on the 35-6 but there is a change in the size of the holes in both the front and rear frame for 37 so the cushions changed in size thus the part number change from B- to 78-.

Thanks everyone, sorry for the late reply. Flatheadfan Tom.... you nailed it. The rubber "cushions" I have look just like the ones in your picture. They are hard as a rock and I can't see how they would dampen any vibrations. Someone in the past cut about a 1/2 inch off one of them to clear something? I am going to keep the floor lever e-brake, so I would just like to replace these, but I don't see them listed in any of the online sources. Any ideas?? I don't think that mount cushion is being reproduced. It differs from the '32-'36 and '37-'40 engine mount. If I was in your situation I would just replace the entire '36 mount you have and use a '37-'40 mount. The replacing mounting platform are somewhat easy to find due to late transmission swaps being made in '37-'40 cars. If you look at the picture below you will see I am still using my '35-'36 rear trans mount which allows me to retain the floor mounted emergency brake. The rubber mounts are the common '37-'40 engine mount. Incidentally, the '35-'36 bearing retainer (rear trans mount), is stronger than '37-'40 retainer.
