On a '39 Torque Tube drive U-Joint, what is the best lube use and method to apply. Thanks for any help.

Assuming that Ford recommended the same lubrication for the '39 as he did for my '47 - "cylinder oil soda soap grease" - the closest thing to that seems to be John Deere corn head grease. Here are a couple alternatives to the above: Could use a 00 grease such as Farm Oyl Fluid Gear Grease check at the local tractor supply stores such as John Deere. PN 901925 distributed by CHS, Inc. St. Paul, MN 55164 Either product can be added through the speedometer turtle hole. You want about 4 OZ. If using Corn Head Grease it also has to be added to the Zerk fitting, Since it will not flow into this location. The Corn Head is a Urea based and the Farm Oyl is petroleum.

Use the fitting on the U-joint cover to add grease. It is often neglected because of the difficulty in reaching it with a grease gun. That can be changed in a couple of ways. You can turn the U-joint outer housing over so the fitting is on the top, which requires removing the floorboad to grease it, or you can add an extension to the fitting to place it further from the cover. That is the method we use. You can use a good grade of chassis lube for the U-joint. If the grease is too stiff, the joint will hollow it out. Hearing of a failed genuine Ford u-joint is rare because transmission oil coming from around the output shaft keeps the U-joint well lubricated.
