Topic: Tank Vent - 34

Someone posted on another thread "In addition you will be removing the tank vent by removing the hydrostatic sending unit."

This got me wondering where is the tank vent on my '34? I have replaced the original tank with a Drake unit and I have replaced the hydrostatic sender with an electric unit that we build for '55 Thunderbirds. I don't remember seeing a vent anywhere but I must have one since the car runs well. Any ideas?

Bill, you are most likely using a vented cap on your tank.

The tank vent is built into the hydrostatic sending unit. It is one of the two tubes exiting the unit and going nowhere. One tube has a small hole on the side and is crimped closed on the end and the other is open dead ended tube. This vent assist in the exiting of air when the tank is being filled at the gas station. and can prevent the gas from burping out and stopping the fill process. It also allows air into the tank when running as a vented cap would do. With the hydrostatic vent the car can run a unvented cap which would prevent the gas from coming out the filler cap. during acceleration.

I believe I have a Drake tank also. Does yours have the fuel line exit on the right? One of the other outlets in this setup was the vent. I took some fuel line and ran the hose up and then down to vent the tank and not let dirt in. If you did nothing the vent just faced horizontal and when filled, gas could escape.

Then you can use an unvented gas cap and fill the tank to the brim without worrying about gas spillage ruining your paint job
