Topic: Budget Motel in Hiwassee

My son and I like 'mom and pop' motels when attending national meets. We look for clean rooms with High Speed Internet. Low price is a factor, as it allows us to spend more on social events and souvenirs and flea market parts.

So far we've done pretty well at locating budget priced accommodations for the national meets we've attended, especially given that the meets often happen in resort areas - where you have to dig to find a reasonable rate.

In Hiwassee, location for the eastern meet, there are two budget motels, The Hiwassee Inn and the Mull Motel. We booked at the Hiwassee Inn for $49.95 a night. They do have High Speed Internet.

I can't really _recommend_ this location as we have yet to stay there; but from Google Street view it looks OK, and the manager was very nice on the phone.

So what I'm posting is not a recommendation, but rather a lead on where to stay if you don't want to pay the rates for the chain motels.

I spoke with David the manager, 706-896-4121.

Henry, we all like to save a buck when we can, and your theory sounds good, but sometimes turns out to be false economy, due to the fact that the EFV8CA is able to negotiate substantial discounts to book large blocks of rooms at the Meet hotels, making the price comparable to the smaller motels that are not always conveniently located. Another consideration for attendees is that the Meet hotel will be mostly filled with V8ers, affording the opportunity to socialize with friends and park along with the other club cars.

Thinking along the "best for the club" lines, the more bookings secured at the host hotel, the larger discounts they provide on banquet and registration rooms. There have been, at some past Meets, so many "Mom & Pop" reservations that the club has not met its contracted room block at the Meet hotel, incurring penalty costs that put the Meet in the red for the Meet.

For those Day-Trippers who aren't registered at the Meet, the Meet hotel discount is not available anyway, so your plan would obviously work better for those budget-conscious V8ers.

Alan, I see both sides of this issue. And believe me, am deeply appreciative of the time and effort it takes to put on a national meet. I enjoy the meets, and realize the amount of detail and volunteerism which goes into making the meet 'work'. It _IS_ a tremendous effort, and we all benefit from the energy put forth by the organizers. We owe them a vote of thanks.

But like I said, if saving money on a motel room allows me to purchase tickets to the banquet ($48.00 X 2) or buy a cap or tee shirt, to my way of thinking it all works in favor of the organizers.

If they are depending on filling rooms at the host hotel in order to get discounts on meeting rooms, that's a somewhat risky decision IMO.

Again, we are grateful to those who put on the meets, but all of us have to make decisions about how we allocate our entertainment dollars, even to the point of the meets being so expensive some members can't afford to attend at all.

I don't mean to start a flame war, just trying to provide some motel information that might be helpful.

The Mull Motel is right in the middle of the small town of Hiawassee. Recently remodeled and a great place to see the V8's cruise past, day and night.
It's next door to the $2.00 Store and across the street from the Post Office and the brand new Ingles Gas Station. Within walking distance of good places to eat.
It's an old place, but you are not there for Architectural Digest or to see the latest technology, it's the V8's. You and your son will like it.

Henry, I don't have a problem with you trying to save a buck by staying at a cheaper hotel. I do have a problem with you advertising it on Fordbarn and this website. If you want to tell your friends about it, no problem, but do it by word of mouth. Your advertisement definitely impacts those who worked hard to find a venue for a meet and try hard to meet the requirements of the contract they signed with the host hotel. If the host RG does not meet their committment to the hotel it can cost them money. A situation like this could have a ripple effect and other RG's may be hesitant to put on a meet knowing that it could cost them money.
Now, if the host hotel was full and you found an alternative I would have no problem with you alerting people. If you had posted this notice after the host hotel was full you would be doing a service for the meet. I have worked on many meets so I know how things work. Not everyone wants to stay at the host hotel which is fine with me. Advertising alternative hotels is another matter.

Well, sorry if I offended anyone. I'll see if the webmaster can kill the thread.

Henry, I don't feel offended, but view our responses as educational in nature. We are just explaining what impact your posting can have on a national meet. You obviously support the V-8 Club or you would not be coming to the meet. We appreciate that support. We also understand that not everyone has the same budget as the next person to attend our meets.
I think you had good intentions and just didn't realize how they could potentially affect those putting on the meet.
