I notice that places like C&G Ford Parts offer both tube steel and cast iron exhaust manifold headers. Which type was original? Is there an advantage/disadvantage to either? I'm changing my 1947 Ford back from dual to single exhaust and I want to make sure I do it right. Thanks. David Daoust

Actually, headers were never a stock Ford item. Oddly, headers have been easier to find than repro stock exhaust manifolds. If you are aiming at a vehicle for judging, headers would not be advisable for "point" reasons, and you should use the stock type manifolds with a crossover pipe. Most headers are designed for dual exhaust only. If I were choosing headers, I'd probably opt for cast iron, as steel tube headers generally have a short life. I don't show my cars, and installed duals because there is no sweeter music than a Ford V8 with glasspack mufflers, in my opinion.
