We have come up with identical numbers on the cowling and tranny. It apears to be 13S174 or 135174. Anyone know if there would be an alpha in that number? Trying to get authentification. Does anyone know how?

Don't know what you are looking at for numbers. The only number that matters in the engine serial number. This was used as the vehicle identification number. It was stamped sequentially by the Rouge engine plant starting with *18-1* in 1932. The number you are looking for will be somewhere between *18-5896295* and *18-6769036* if you have a V8 engine and *1GA-1* and *1GA-34801* if you have the 6 cylinder engine. The engine number was stamped at the very top of the transmission housing above the little inspection door at the engine plant. It was then transferred to the top of the left frame rail in three places when the engine was installed in a frame. The only one you can find without lifting the body is somewhere between the cowl and radiator usually near the front cross member. When looking for it use a strong light and very mild abrasives as the number was stamped lightly and can be obliterated by strong scr*ping, sanding, or grinding. Ford did not stamp serial numbers on the cowls of the cars in this time period although some body types (such as station wagons) did have body numbers stamped here.
