Topic: Front bearing retainer p/n 39 trans

  I have a 1939 Ford transmission with a damaged front bearing retainer. (the part that the throwout bearing slides on). The part number cast on it is 8M-7050. I have been told that part is intended for a 1949-1950 Mercury trans. Should the correct part be 78-7050? What's the difference between these two parts? Should reinstall a 8M-7050 just to keep things simple? Thanks!

  The 78- can be used on any of the 32-48 Ford passenger transmissions. It differs from the very early style B- and the 8M- since it has a modern type of seal for the input shaft. I am not familiar with the 8M- other physical Spec. The 78- has a front snout that is 2.63" long and 1.75" diameter. If you use the 35-48 Ford 9 or 10 " pressure plate you will need the throwout bearing that fits the pressure plate fingers properly and the hub for the bearing that fits both the throwout and the bearing retainer front snout properly. If the Spec. on the 8M- are the same as the 78- there is no need to change it.

  it has a modern seal as oppossed to the labrynth type seal which means it will work at keeping trans oil off your clutch better

  Thanks. I went to C@G auto parts today and they had an exploded drawing of P/N 8M-7050. It is supposed to be for a 49-50 Mercury, and clearly shows a lab seal. I bought a neproene seal that will fit the 78-7050 retainer. Now I have to shop around and find the proper bearing retainer.

  We save the good ones off the core transmissions we buy. They are totally cleaned and repainted. I usually have a half dozen or so on hand at any given time.
